Windows 2000 Server With the release of the Windows 2000 Server, Microsoft has addressed many weaknesses in Windows NT, both on server and workstation versions specifically in areas such as reliability, scalability and manageability. For Enterprises that maintain a Microsoft-centric environment this package is a nice upgrade to Windows NT 4. The installation of Windows 2000 is quite hassle free, and everything worked right the first time. The most significant new feature in Windows 2000 Server is Active Directory, which is the replacement for Windows NT domain-controller. It is a nice improvement for large networks, which are organized in multiple domains. As with the management console, almost all management of the local server and network resources, for eg. hardware configuration, network storage etc., are performed through the MMC (Microsoft Management Console) interface. Windows 2000 Server seems worth an upgrade but implications for the organisation need to be considered carefully. |
